The main subject has life as indicated some air bubbles near her mouth, and more abstractly by the living plants she fosters and Jellyfish. I perceive the plants as symbols of growth as well, and the jellyfish and their nervous systems as symbols of the subject’s ability to feel.
This, I think contrasts with the onlookers, who are not colored in, but seem compelled by the potential shown by this subject. “That could be me one day,” and “She’s beautiful.”
Enamored, but perhaps trapped as they are, for they’re situated on fragile platforms with no visible options except to dream. Another commentor views the subject as the dreamer here, and I think that is totally possible, but I like to the think that the dreamers are the people looking on.
I think this is their hope.
